It looks like open season for thriller writers. My fellow racer/writer Peter James was lucky to escape unhurt from an 80mph crash at Oulton Park in, yes, a Citroen 2CV. The graphic photographs even made the Daily Mail. And two days ago, both outboard motors failed on my fishing boat in Rye Bay, forcing me to anchor on a falling tide and radio Dover Coastguard to call out the local lifeboat. They reached me within twenty minutes, watched from the shore by a curious crowd of early holidaymakers. But at least the lifeboat crew acknowledged I was properly equipped and not some thoughtless nerd. Embarrassing though, and all I had to show for the trip was four mackerel.
Yesterday we met old friends for lunch at Sandwich and John was telling us about his new pastime: gliding. A shadow passed over my wife’s face…
